A significant breakthrough in the progress of SDN into deployed Wide Area Networks was demonstrated in Tokyo in late May this year. UTStarcom demonstrated that its SOO SDN controller can turn its widely deployed MPLS-TP based packet optical platform into a provisioning engine not only for MEF Ethernet services but also for IP VPN services, both at IPv4 and IPv6. This allows traditional Layer 3 IP services to be delivered programmatically via an SDN controller over a packet optical transport platform with the associated cost and operational benefits. Another SDN application demonstrated was the capability for both dynamic and scheduled provisioning of bandwidth on demand services.
